Fishing Report
March 2010
Hello from Lake Fork. My March report is always a great report to write. Winter is over and warm weather is coming. Many anglers have been looking forward to a warming trend, I know that I have.
Historically, March is known for the spawn here at Lake Fork. I love to fish deep water, but March and April I will be fishing shallow. To me shallow is 10 foot or less, this is where most of the bass in Lake Fork will be. Many anglers fish up in one or two foot this time of year. What they don’t realize is that the really big fish are under their boat in 5 – 10 foot. These big fish did not grow up in one of the nations most pressured lakes by living in one or two foot of water. They got big by learning how to hide out, just out of sight. I’m going to explain a little and give a few tips that will hopefully put you on one of the cold water trophies.
When I am fishing Lake Fork in March, I look for a few key characteristics of an area before fishing it. The number one thing I look for is shallow water, close to deep water. Second, Grass (milfoil or hydrilla). Third, a hard sandy bottom. These three ingredients will usually equal quality bites. In these areas I like to throw an array of different baits. For covering water quickly, I throw a Santone Chatterbait on a 7’ Custom Angle Rod heavy action, with 20 pound fluorocarbon on a high speed reel. When I slow down, I like to throw a Texas rigged Gene Larew Biggle Bug or a Grande Bass Mutant, rigged on a 7’ Custom Angle Rod heavy action and 50 lb braided line. When the bite seems tough or the water is clear, rig up a shakey head. My two favorite shakey head baits are a Gene Larew 4” salt craw or a Grande Bass Rattlesnake. These two baits will flat out catch fish year around. I like to fish the shakey head on Custom Angle Rod with 12 fluorocarbon line. Remember that these big fish use the creek channels and ditches as highways, to and from deep water. Find these areas and this will be where they should be. I like to start at the back of a creek and fish my way out. In March, I like a creek that is 10 foot deep with 3 or 4 foot on the sides. This is a really good spot.
A popular fishing method for March and April is bed fishing. Without a doubt it is very effective. Using Costa Del Mar sunglasses, anglers are able to see the fish laying eggs in shallow water. Many times these fish can be relatively easy to catch. Here I like to use a Santone finesse jig with a Gene Larew finesse craw behind it. The Santone jig company uses Gamakatsu hooks, which are the sharpest and most durable hooks on the market. The sharp hook is very important. I have yet to find a bass spawning that does not go nuts over that set up, although you will have to play around with colors of the craw to find one she cannot stand.
If you fish Lake Fork on a regular basis, or if you are just visiting, having a chip from www.boatlanes.com is a must. Just insert into your gps unit, download and whoala, all of the boat lanes right there as waypoints. No more tearing your boat up, not being sure if you should be running there or not.
Please remember that the sun will still cause damage to your eyes while fishing. So wear your Costa Del Mar polarized sunglasses anytime the sun is shining.
Guided trips on Lake Fork are a sure way to have a fun filled relaxing day. Our spring dates are filling quickly and for that we are blessed. Let me be the first one you call for your guide trip, as all I can guarantee is that I will try my hardest to #1 catch fish, #2 have a great time doing it.
Often I get asked about whom I trust to work on my outboard motor or who should I buy a boat from. I have to say Sartin Marine in Yantis, Texas is the go to place. Billy, Wayne and staff will take care of anything you need. Give them a call if you ever have a boat or motor question.
I hope these tips help you catch the bass of your dreams. Please know that I am always here to try and answer any questions you might have. Myself and several other Guides that I work with are available for public speaking, such as bass club meetings, boy scout meetings etc. at no cost to you. We can go over any topics related to Lake Fork or Bass Fishing, Boating etc.
Please practice C.P.R. (Catch, Photo, and Release). It takes many years for these fish to grow to their trophy size. By practicing a quick release, it allows other anglers to enjoy the same experience as you. Replica mounts can be made for your wall that look better and last longer than a real mount. Remember life jackets and kill switches any time the outboard motor is running or anytime you feel it would just be safer to wear it. Your safety is #1!

Fishing Report
January 2010
Hello from Lake Fork. I hope your Christmas was great and you had a good New Year. It is hard to believe our fish will be moving up to bed in only eight weeks or less.
Historically, January is one of the best big fish months of the year. I say this due to the amount of bass caught over 10 pounds that have been caught this month vs. the little amount of fishing pressure. Someone usually always catches at least one fish over 13 pounds this month. I’m going to explain a little and give a few tips that will hopefully put you on one of the cold water trophies.
Lake Fork will be very cold this month. Fishing the beginning of January usually is not as good for us as the end of January. It is amazing how much these fish transition in only 3 or 4 weeks. In early January, I like fishing deep water hide outs with black and blue Santone jigs with a Gene Larew Salt Craw matching trailer or a Grande Bass Rattlesnake on a shakey head. Toward the end of the month and in to February is time for lipless crankbaits. I own about 20 different brands of lipless crankbaits and catch fish on all of them. Use any brand you have confidence in as long as it is red, chartreuse or gold. I also recommend ALWAYS replacing the factory hooks with a quality aftermarket hook. On any size under ½ ounce use a #4 treble hook on the front and back. Anything ½ ounce and bigger, use a #2 treble hook front and back. These large hooks make fishing the grass more difficult, but will be a blessing if freak nasty decides to swallow some hard plastic!! The third lure I will always have on my Custom Angle Rod is a suspending jerkbait like a Smithwick Rogue. Buy the biggest one you can find as they make several different models. Change the hooks on this bait as well with a #2 up front and #2’s in the middle and back. The largest fish I have ever seen in Lake Fork ate a gold suspending rogue last January. I estimated her at 16 + pounds. She straightened all three stock trebles and got off, this is why I preach big good hooks!! Throw this bait any where you can in 8 foot or less. I like to start at the mouth of a creek and fish it straight down the middle, not along the banks.
Location is more important this month than any other month of the year. Fishing in January will pretty much set up my playing field for February, March and April. I will be following the big girls out of deep water, on to the main lake points, on to the secondary points, into the creek channel bends and then onto the back of the creeks to spawn. This is the transition pattern to follow. Remember not all fish move up at one time, so there will be fish in all of these areas until the middle of May.
Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh were a blast this year. We ended up with several fish over 7 pounds with two over 8 pounds. We averaged 40 – 150 bass a day and our two favorite baits were the new Gene Larew Biffle Bug and a Grande Bass Rattlesnake. I look forward to February – October 2010 so I can put these two great baits back to work once again here on Lake Fork. The Biffle Bug and Rattlesnake make a great combination for any circumstance. If a fish won’t eat one, it will always eat the other.
Please remember that the sun will still cause damage to your eyes while fishing in January. So wear your Costa Del Mar polarized sunglasses anytime the sun is shining.
Guided trips on Lake Fork will start Jan. 1, 2010. We are blessed that calls are already coming in for some early spring action. Please call us soon to ensure your dates are available.

August 2009 Hello fellow anglers and welcome to Angle 6’8 medium action rod and your reel should have 12 – 14 lb. fluorocarbon line. The fluorocarbon line will allow the bait to sink more natural. I hope these tips help you catch the bass of your dreams. Please know that I am always here to try and answer any questions you might have. Once again, welcome to Please practice C.P.R. Fishing Report June 2009 Spring time is coming to a close and the hot days of summer are closing in quickly. This is one of my favorite times of year to be on Most anglers come to In June, the large fish have completed their spawn and are in search for food to replenish energy burned during this process. Most of these big fish will be found in deeper water. I consider deeper water, 10 – 30 foot. This will be the depth range to fish day and night. They will be foraging on crawfish, bream, shad, barfish and crappie. So this gives an angler a variety of lure choices when going off shore. Before heading out on the water, try a little map study. Find and circle main lake points, humps, ledges and fast tapering banks. Once on the water go to these places and locate the ones that have grass very close by. Grass is a key ingredient in the whole process. I like to fish deep water with hydrilla and/or milfoil very close by. Add some timber, laydowns or brush piles to the mix and you will have a perfect spot. I will be using a Custom Angle Moby Bass Rod 7 – 7’6 heavy action rod. My reels are spooled with 20 – 25 lb. Seaguar fluorocarbon or 50 – 65 lb. Power Pro braided line. My theory is why get hooked up with a fish of a lifetime, without the gear to get it in the boat. My first two lure choices for June are a A I do want to say that Night fishing on Lake Fork Day and Night endorses the following sponsors: Custom Angle Rods, Costa Del Mar Sunglasses, Grande Bass Bait’s, and Sartin Marine. Lake Fork Day and Night Guide Service Here recently, I was contacted by the Grande Bass Bait Company, I was asked to join their pro staff team. Little did they know that I was already using Grande Bass baits, after what I had seen Lance Vick do with them. (mama did not raise a fool). So of course I jumped on this opportunity and look forward to my clients having the opportunity to reap from their benefits as well!! If you want to join me on a guided Many of the fish are shallow during this time of year. An angler should be able to go into the back of any creek and get bit here on If sight fishing is your thing, now is the time to do it. A Revenge ¼ ounce jig with a Grandebass Machine as the trailer will do the trick. Pitch this bait past the bed and shake it into the nest. We have noticed several waves of fish that have already spawned out. But, our spawn last into May, so this bite will continue for some time to come. Keep a close eye on the weather that led up to your trip. Try to fish where the recent wind and rain has not affected the water by turbulence and current. This is where your shallow fish will be congregated. Of all the times that I have spoke about

Fishing Report
Lake Fork :
Day Report: I like to start a trip an hour or so before daylight. The big fish really go into a feeding frenzy during that first and last hour of darkness this time of year. I have found a worm that these big fish love. The new Gene Larew El Salto Special is a 12 inch worm and it’s catching fish for us from 1lb. – 10 lbs. Throw this worm until first light on the edge of grass. It is a good idea to keep a Sebile Magic Swimmer or a Sebile Splasher on the deck for the occasional schooling fish. I would keep this rod out all day, just in case they come up close. Then switch to a Revenge Jig in Green Pumpkin Chameleon and start moving out deeper and deeper. This new Revenge Jig and a Sweet Beaver makes for a deadly combination. I have ever used a jig that looks this realistic in the water. Here lately I have just been Trophy hunting and it has worked out on many days. Most of my day fish are in 20 – 50 ft. of water. During the middle of the day, I will head out to the deep water and catch dropshot fish on mainlake structure. This past Friday, Dana Deason, fished with me and he had a great afternoon with a stringer at over 40 pounds. Dana had this stringer in less than 30 minutes on a deep diving crankbait. 30 – 40 fish days can be common if you downsize to a dropshot, but I have avoided this pattern as many of these places are stacked up with 1 – 4 lb fish, no big ones. Trophy hunting with big baits can cut your numbers drastically, but it can pay off big time. Depending on how the fish are set up on the off shore structure, I usually have each client throw something different and let the fish talk to me. If you mark fish on the bottom, fish on the bottom. If you mark the fish suspended, fish suspended. Deep water is pretty simple, you just have to use the process of elimination and keep an open mind.
Folks the night fishing is great this time of year. I have much confidence in catching fish over 10 pounds during the summer at night. I use only a handful of baits. I’ll Texas rig a Reaction Innovations big unit or swim a Revenge jig.
Tips:
Drink plenty of water. Wear your Costa Del Mar sunglasses and use a spotlight at night, not just your GPS.

Fishing Report
Lake Fork:
Day Report: If you are going to catch fish on Lake Fork during the month of July, you’ve got three choices. These three choices are to fish early, late or at night. Not to say these big fish do not eat during the middle of the day, but its nothing like during low light periods. Due to the heat I will run split day trips to avoid the heat and full night trips during July and August because I want my clients to be successful.
Great times to be on the water are 5:30 am to 10:00 am and 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm. During this time target main lake grass edges. I have found that this year the bass are holding on hydrilla more so than milfoil. If the grass bed has both, that’s a plus. I like to target the edges with a Carolina Rig or power drop rig. On these rigs I am using a Sweet Beaver or Flirt. You will have to play around with colors, it varies day to day. This is a good way to catch 8 pound and bigger fish.
Now, if just catching a boat load of 1 – 5 lb fish is what you want to do here is what’s working now. Rig up a drop shot rig with 20 lb. Power Pro or 14 lb Seagaur Fluorocarbon and fish the edge of hydrilla / milfoil mats. I like to use a Reaction Innovations Flirt 6.95. This works best early and late in the day and can also be used in deeper water.
If you want to brave the 100 degree heat, fish a 1 ounce Revenge jig with a sweet beaver or double wide beaver trailer in 20 – 35 ft. of water around big trees. (target the shady side) Hold tight so they don’t jerk the rod out of your hand!
Folks the night fishing is great this time of year. I have more confidence in catching fish over 10 pounds at night than during the day. In the last month, my clients have caught some really big fish. I use only a handful of baits. I’ll Texas rig a Reaction Innovations big unit or swim a Revenge jig. Last year during the July and August full moon, the boat ramps were so full many anglers were having to park down the highways. So if you plan on coming during these special times, come early and stay late!
Tips:
While running at night wear a pair of Costa Del Mar sunglasses with Sunrise CR39 lenses. Bugs, rain etc. can damage your eyes at night. These lenses will not only protect you, but they brighten solid objects as you are running down the lake.

Fishing Report
Lake Fork:
Day Report: Deep water and grass. Those are the two keys to catching the fish of your dreams. The fishing here at Lake Fork has never been better. In the last two weeks my clients have caught so many Bass over seven pounds, it’s truly amazing. I literally have so many photos of 7, 8 and 9 pound fish that I cannot even keep them organized. We have caught these fish on numerous baits but nothing has worked better than a Revenge Jig and a Reaction Innovations Big Unit. When I fish these two baits I like to start on the drop off adjacent to a hump, ledge, point etc. Sometimes the fish are on top of the drop and sometimes they are positioned on the bottom of it. I like to find an area that drops a minimum of 12 – 20 ft but 12 – 30ft. is not uncommon. Yesterday my clients caught almost 40 lbs of fish on one drop using a 1 ounce Revenge jig, in less than 30 minutes. While using this heavy jig we use a Custom Angle Moby Bass rod 7 Heavy, made right here at Lake Fork. I spool up with two different lines that both work equally well, either Power Pro braid in 65 lb test or Seagaur fluorocarbon in 25 lb test. When the 7 – 11 lb fish hit, you want the extra insurance of these fine lines to get your lunker to the boat.
Most of us have heard the term Run and Gun. This is when an angler pulls up on a spot and fishes it for a short time looking for a quick bite or two if no success quickly leaving to the next spot in search for the same result. This is how I approach deep water fishing. I look at it like this, they are either biting here or they aren’t. If an angler pulls up on a spot and the big fish are there and biting, you will know it in a short amount of time. There is no reason to hole sit this time of year.
I get asked quite often, “What bait do you use to search for big fish this time of year?” The answer is simple, a deep diving crankbait like a Sebile Koolie Minnow. This bait is great on open water points like SRA. If I am searching for a school of these big fish while in the timber (Main lake points at the mouth of Mustang Creek / Mouth of Dale Creek) I will use a Texas rigged Big Unit and fish it on a heavy weight so I can move it quickly.
Now, if just catching a boat load of 1 – 5 lb fish is what you want to do here is what’s working now. Rig up a drop shot rig with 20 lb. Power Pro and fish the edge of hydrilla / milfoil mats. I like to use a Reaction Innovations Flirt 6.95. This works best early and late in the day and can also be used in deeper water.
Folks the night fishing is great this time of year. I usually don’t promise anything on any of my trips, but night fishing here on Lake Fork is usually a sure bet. Remember that I have over 20 + years of night fishing experience and safety is my number one concern. The air temps usually fall into the mid 70’s so this makes summer time night fishing very enjoyable.
Tips:
This time of year we must protect ourselves from the sun. Wearing hats and sunblock are a must. Another must is to take care of our eyes. Many anglers are making the mistake of thinking that the only time they need quality polarized glasses is during the spring while sight fishing. This is a huge mistake and the sun will permanently damage our eyes. I use Costa Del Mar sunglasses year around and have more many years. Costa Del Mar sunglasses are made for fishing and have protected me perfectly.
Hydration this time of year is also important; remember to bring plenty of ice and water on the boat so dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke doesn’t ruin your day.
Good Luck fishing and feel free to call me anytime with any questions.

We will begin our trip at safe light and when we return to Fishing Report Well folks it’s been a long drawn out spring here at With the upcoming Legend tournament this weekend, here are few tips that should get you bit. Going into a tournament on Another thing I have noticed is that the hydrilla and milfoil is growing more this year than the past 3-4 years. It is actually choking the fish out in many places that I like to fish. We have been finding larger schools of shad and bass in areas that are lacking these grasses. Once you have caught some unders or if you just want to go for the big one, here are a few tips for that. Take a Sebile Koolie minnow and dig the bottom on main lake deep structure. The colors amber fashion and white lady should work the best. Use your electronics to find the schools of feeding fish, cast past them and crank it through. I like to use 20 lb power pro braid or 15 lb. Seagaur fluorocarbon line for this application. If you know they are there but fail to hook up, try the dropshot prior to leaving the area. Some areas you might want to graph are SRA, sandbar off the dam, Chaney point road bed and Dale hump. These places are a great post spawn hang out for large schools of fish. Fishing Report
Lake Fork:
Goodness, where do I start? It’s Easter Sunday at 5:00 in the morning and I am just now getting the time to do my report. Got to be at church in a few hours and then back on a trip at lunch. This is turning out to be the best year for Lake Fork in over 10 years. There has not been a day in March that we have not ended up wacking some big fish. Seems like everyone who approaches me at the marinas and boat ramps are having some good success as well. It has not mattered if we fish the upper or lower end of the lake, good numbers of big fish can be found.
This report is going to be on the last 3 days only due to the rain. The water temperature is rising quickly and the lake is clearing up from our recent rains. There are two different fish to target this next week, pre-spawners and spawners. For the pre-spawn fish I am having the best luck on a Reaction Innovations sweet beaver, texas rigged. Use this bait in 5-12 foot of water and fish outside grass lines and timber. This has produced the best numbers. Color selection on the beaver has not been that important. We have used green pumpkin/red flake, watermelon/red and big Texan. For the shallow water fish I am using 3 baits. Early in the morning the Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper will pick up cruising fish up close to the bank or over the shallow grass beds. Once the water warms to 62 degrees, its time to go sight fishing. My two favorite baits this month for bed fishing, have been a 4.0 Boom Boom tube in California 420 and a lizard. Color is very important here because some fish on beds will eat one color over another. I keep 4-5 different color Tubes and Lizards handy.
Lots of fish being caught in White Oak, Wolf, Penson, Bell and Rogers creek right now. So hopefully that will give you a starting point.
Also, don’t be afraid to blind fish beds in the muddy water. By going into Glade or Birch and fan casting where you know they should be, could get your line stretched!
I will have some great pictures on my website later tonight. I went fishing alone on Thursday afternoon just doing some scouting, I caught my biggest fish of the 2008 season a 9.2lb bed fish. Jersey Dan from the Texas Fishing Forum was nice enough to come over and get some great photos for me. Congrats to my the following clients – Will Simcox / 9.0lb, Rodney Harrison / 7 +, John from Texas Air Hydraulics and his friend Justin / 7.8 lb. These fish were all caught in the last three days and were entered in the Lake Fork Big Bass Survey.
I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork on a professional guided fishing trip. All you really need to go fishing with me is a fishing license. I provide rods, reels, tackle etc. at no extra charge. Digital Photos of your fish will be taken at no charge.

Fishing Report
Lake Fork:
As I write this report I am reflecting on the fun I had yesterday on the lake with an old friend of mine. Mike caught his personal best (7.5 lbs) at 8:30 in the morning and nearly beat it again at 1:00 in the afternoon (7.2 lbs). We lost an absolute giant of a fish yesterday that somehow pulled free of # 3 owner wide gap trebles. Although 7 lbs. on Lake Fork is not uncommon, it sure made for a good start and an exciting day. I have lots of new photos that will be posted soon on the 2008 photo gallery of www.lakeforkdayandnight.com.
The water temperature yesterday reached 54 degrees by the end of the day. Today the water temperature reached 57, remember bass will spawn in 62, so it will not be long.
The number one thing I look for in February is warm water. If you can find areas that lack current or wind and have grass close to deep water, you will be in business. I will be throwing only a few baits for the next two weeks. These are lipless baits like the Sebile Flatt Shad, Stick baits like a rogue and a revenge spinnerbait. Lately, colors have not been important. I primarily throw shades of red or gold. But, I have seen other anglers using white, chrome, and chartreuse with good results.
If you are new to Lake Fork this year, here are two areas to target this month. It’s no secret that Birch and Glade creeks have produced huge fish year after year. But, you might want to check out Long Branch, Coon, Opposum, Little White Oak, White Oak and Penson Bay. The best thing to do is just cover water until you can find a group of fish. Once you locate them you should be able to catch several in one area. I like to fish rogues early and lipless baits the rest of the day. The spinnerbait has always worked best for me in windy or overcast conditions.
Catching Bass on Lake Fork the next two weeks is pretty simple. It’s usually the most productive time of year for most anglers. February and March on Lake Fork has provided more anglers with a Bass of a lifetime than any other months of the year. (Summer Night trips do not count!!!!!)
Good luck fishing and remember to use good quality hooks and line. The Sebile baits come with Owner hooks that do not need changing. But, most all others need to be converted. I would not fish any line less than 17 lb. test, unless you want to be heartbroken, 20 – 30 lb. is spooled up on my reels. Finesse fishing has its time and place, but February and March at Lake Fork is not that time!
I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork on a professional guided fishing trip. All you really need to go fishing with me is a fishing license. I can provide rods, reels, tackle etc. with not extra charge.

Fishing Report
Lake Fork: Lake Monticello has been keeping me too busy to get out much on Fork. But, starting next week I will be back to Lake Fork to fish the new Sebile Flatt Shad for the pre-spawn bite. This bait is going to catch us some whoppers. This is going to be an exciting year for Lake Fork. Lake Monticello: Lake Monticello has been a lot of fun lately. Two weeks ago I noticed a huge wave of fish move up onto beds. They were up for 3 days and then they were done. But, we are still catching many fish in a pre-spawn pattern. So the spawn is nowhere close to over yet. Last Friday I had a trip and we wore the fish out. It was cloudy and the topwater bite lasted the whole trip. We had 20 + topwater fish in just four hours. It was so much fun watching those fish blow up on the Sebile splasher. We also caught a good amount of fish on a Reaction Innovations Vixen. My medium action Moby Custom Angle rod is great for topwater, not a single fish got off all day with this new rod. Saturday I went with Barry Hanson (East Texas Angler) to film a show on Monticello. That morning I stopped by the carwash to spray off the boat, mistake! When I got to the lake at 7:00 am I had a ½ inch sheet of ice covering the boat, soap bubbles were frozen solid. We had a good morning catching fish on Sweet Beavers. Mid day we only caught a few fish on the Arkie U-bolt head with a flirt, but some anglers from Oklahoma came thru the same area we had just fished and caught 11 fish over 3 lbs. on roadrunners and beetlespins. I don’t usually bass fish with these two baits and was humbled by this. Its funny to me how fish are and how they will only bite certain baits sometimes. If you are coming to Monticello this week try to start early or stay late. The topwater bite is awesome right now.
I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork or Lake Monticello on a professional guided fishing trip. Plenty of dates are always available to get you out on the water and having a great time. February will kick off the pre-spawn here at Lake Fork and dates during this time will book quickly so please plan ahead for your trip.

Lake Fork Report: Jan 3, 2008 Lake Level: all lakes are in great shape Water Clarity: Clear to stained: Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh is clear Water temp: Weather: Lows today in the 30’s with a warming trend and a chance of rain this weekend. News: Sebile baits has introduced a Blood Red Series for 2008 into its line of fascinating baits that will be available starting at the Arlington outdoor show next weekend at Brannons Sporting Goods. These new baits are like nothing you have ever used before and believe me, it’s the real deal!
Fishing Report
Lake Fork: It is hard to believe but I have only been on Lake Fork once in the last two weeks. Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh have been taking up all of my time. The fishing on these lakes has been outstanding so this weeks report will focus on these two fine lakes. But, another 3 weeks and Lake Fork should be ON! Lake Monticello: Monticello has been outstanding. The fish are in a pre-spawn pattern with a few fish starting to show up in the shallows on nest. Of course we have been doing our best catching during the week when the lake is not so packed with anglers. Also, just like in the years past, the wintertime night bite is awesome on this lake. Sight fishing this year is being hindered by stained water in Smith and Blundell creeks. But, I know that a lot of fish are yet to move up because out of 100 or so fish we caught last week only one had a bloody tail as most other were slap full of eggs. These pre-spawners are falling to numerous baits but a Sweet Beaver, Skinny Dipper and Flatt Shad have been the top producers for larger fish. A drop shot flirt or light Carolina rig will catch its share of dinks, if numbers are important to you. Focus in and around the first breakline adjacent to any spawning flats or points. I would suspect that there would be a huge wave of skinny water fish moving up in the next day or two. So if you come soon, don’t forget your polarized glasses!
Lake Welsh: This little jewel of a lake saved me on Saturday. We started out on Monticello Saturday morning with only 8 fish or so by 10:00 am. We loaded both boats up and headed over to Welsh. First cast 5 pounder, second cast 4 pounder. We ended up catching fish just about everywhere we stopped. The fish on the North end of the lake have already spawned out and fry are on every stump. The fish on the South end of the lake are still lingering around brush piles that are located on the creek channels headed into shallow water. The fish up North fell for a Skinny Dipper while a Beaver and drop shot was the ticket down south. We ended up fishing a little after dark and left these fish still biting. They probably would of bit all night. This is another great wintertime night fishing lake! If you can get out in the next 10 days, you should be able to find a huge wave of spawners on the south end.
I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork, Lake Monticello or Lake Welsh on a professional guided fishing trip. Fishing Report
Lake Fork:
It is hard to believe that Christmas is right around the corner, time flies when you’re having fun. On 21Nov07 East Texas was hit by a Northern cold front, temperatures dropped from the 70’s and 80’s to lows in the 30’s overnight. So an exact report on what has been working the last two weeks would not do anyone much good. But, what I will report is how we catch these cold weather fish on Fork year after year during this time. Many of us have been waiting for this cooler weather for several reasons. I like the cooler weather because the appetite of the bass and crappie will kick into overdrive as they feed up for the winter. It also narrows down my bait selection to only a few and the fish will really group up on the baitfish making numbers of catches good once schools are found. Anglers visiting Lake Fork during December and January will find concentrations of Bass in two locations, very shallow (2-9 ft.) and very deep (20-40 ft). For the shallow water bite I will be throwing two styles of baits being a lipless crankbait like the Sebile Flatt shad and a shakey head like the Arkie u-bolt or jerkey head. I will team up these finesse heads with a Reaction Innovations 6.95 or 4.95 flirt. Color on the lipless bait is something you will have to experiment with day to day. I like using the yo-yo retrieve better than a burning retrieve; this seems to always catch larger fish for us. On the flirt I like the flirt I like the colors Juicy, California 420 and some others in greens and browns. I fish the head in the creeks and on the edges, dead sticking. The key here is to find grass and shad in the back of the creeks. Start at the back of a creek and work half way out, if no takers try another. For the deep water bite we will be using four styles of baits being one of my custom spoons, drop shot (flirt), swim bait and a Flatt Shad. While fishing deep this time of year I depend greatly on my electronics. I always start out with my custom spoon on these fish. A lot of guys are casting a spoon and that is fine. But, when I have marked the fish in 20-40 ft, I like to fish vertical because I can ensure where they are and if they have moved by watching my graph. Make sure you pause and shake the spoon on the way back up to the boat just incase there are some suspended fish under the boat. Another great way to catch some lunkers deep is taking the flatt shad and fishing it vertical or horizontal off the bottom (yo-yo), like a spoon. This is the only lipless bait that I will use for this presentation because it isn’t as loud as others and doesn’t seem to spook any fish in the school, other will.
Lake Monticello:
December and January offers a limited time of extraordinary wintertime fishing with daily catches in the 40’s to 50’s common. This is the time of year that this lake shines. The lake is in great shape with visibility clearing up after the algae bloom and levels rising with water from Bob Sandlin being pumped in. The big females are in a pre-spawn pattern now. We have been catching fish all over the lake to include the cold side, hot side, discharge and in between. My favorite baits to catch these bass in on topwater; baits like the Sebile splasher and a Reaction Innovations Trixie Shark will be a sure thing early, late and all day if it is cloudy. We can expect to start seeing some fish on the beds it two weeks (if the cool weather hangs around). During the day lipless baits, crankbaits, Boom Boom tubes and a drop shot is hard to beat. The lake is short of vegetation this year so the lilly pads and timber is a great place for the hawgs to be hanging out.
I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork, Lake Monticello or Lake Welsh on a professional guided fishing trip. I still have some dates available for December and January. February will kick off the pre-spawn here at Lake Fork and dates during this time will book quickly so please plan ahead for your trip.

Fishing Report Lake Fork : The fishing here on Lake Fork the last few weeks has been up and down. I have found a couple of baits that should get you bit. We have caught some topwater fish early using a Reaction Innovations Vixen over the grass. If you don’t get bit with the topwater, switch back and forth with a Revenge Spinnerbait in the color shad. Then we are going to a Sebile Flatt Shad after the sun comes up and burning this bait around the grass edges. This is a good tactic for most of the morning. The key here is covering lots of water until you find a group. After lunch an Arkie jerky head with a 6.95 Flirt in Sprayed Grass or Juicy has been catching numbers, not any lunkers. We have been fishing the jerky head around the back half of the creeks around big stumps along the creek channels. You might want to check out some boat docks close to deep water. Lake Monticello : The fishing on Lake Monticello is absolutely awesome. If you don’t think you can get tired of catching bass, visit this lake with me in the next two months. This week we have averaged 40-80 bass on a full day trip. The lake is about two foot low and the water is off color, due to an algae bloom. The water temperature at the discharge is still in the mid 90’s. Here we have been using a couple of baits to include a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver, Skinny Dipper and a Boom Boom Tube. Texas or Carolina rig has not mattered they will eat both. Find your creek channel edges and fish the obvious timber that is sticking up everywhere. The Dam is also holding some good numbers. Fishing Report
What a great time we have had the last two weeks. I have had to give my recent clients the option of catching lots of smaller fish or a few large ones. The last 10 days most of our fish catches have been around 20-30 per day. It seems the 4lb. and under class fish are all over the grass, while the 5lb. and over class fish are on a deep-water pattern. Not saying this always holds up as we have been catching lots of 1-3 lb. fish on topwater when an 8lb+ fish comes to eat out of nowhere. But, over all it is one or the other. The grass pattern is the most dependable for me right now. We are taking the Sebile Flat Shad and burning this bait over the grass first thing in the morning. The Splasher 90 and 72 has gotten bit as well over the grass, especially on a calm morning. After the sun comes up focus on the outer edges of the grass in 7-15 foot of water. Here I would use the Flat Shad and a Texas Rigged Sweet beaver. If a big bite is what you are looking for, fish anywhere from 17-35 foot of water. I had a fish hooked up on Thursday that was without a doubt share-a-lunker class. She made my 12.08 last year look small. Unfortunately she came off after a long fight and a head-shaking jump. This fish fell to the Double Wide beaver, Texas Rigged on a creek channel bend. Also, out deep check your spots with a Carolina rigged Big Unit. Keep an eye out for schooling bass during the day and the best bait to catch them with is the Splasher 72 worked very fast over their heads.
The temperatures are perfect for a day on Lake Fork, not too hot and not too cold. But, starting next month I will be offering my trips to Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh. These two fine lakes often produce 40-60 fish per day for my clients. This is always a fun trip for everyone. I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork, Lake Monticello or Lake Welsh on a professional guided fishing trip. With the trees turning fall colors and the weather right, there is not a better time to go fishing. Now is the time to start booking your spring trips with me so I can ensure availability.

Lake Fork Report: 27Sep2007 Lake Level: Full Water Clarity: Clear to stained (main lake) Water temp: 79-82 Weather: The past few days have been perfect. Yesterday we received some much-needed rain. The next 7 days should be clear to partly cloudy with an occasional rain shower possible Monday. Highs should be in the mid to upper 80’s. News: September has always been a great time to catch fish here on Lake Fork. Summer is almost over and the fish know it. The recent Mcdonalds tournament really showcased the amount of big fish swimming in these waters. With a final count of over the slot fish exceeding 35, this wonderful lake shined like a diamond. On the second evening of the tournament a client of mine from Ohio said, “If this many overs are being caught, can you imagine how many 7-10 lb fish are being caught in the 22-23 ¾ range”. It is no secret that Lake Fork is one of the best bass fishing lakes in the world. With September almost over so is the night fishing, for my guide service. The bite is so strong now during the day, it would make the night bite extremely tough. October is going to be a time for catching numbers here on the lake. Berkley is having their tournament on Oct. 13&14. Last year they put on one of the most professional amateur tournaments I have ever seen. Fishing Report
If an angler wants to catch a bass, all he or she needs to do is come fishing on Lake Fork during the month of October. Just about any presentation will work this month, but here are a few that will make you more productive. This past week we have noticed the shad population shift into a fall migration pattern. Many of the baitfish is moving off of the mainlake and into the larger creeks around the lake. Little Caney, Long Branch, Glade and Pincher will give you a starting point. Early in the morning, late in the day and if it is cloudy, topwater baits like the Sebile splasher 72 or 90 is a fun way to catch a lot of fish over the grass. The last two days I had Keeton Eoff from Sebile USA, Rick Dusick from The Bargain Tackle Box, Lee Yowell from Legend boats and a bunch of others out on a two-day trip, we wacked them! In just over 8 hours of fishing inbetween meetings and a lightening storm we had over 80 bass, with a 9.00, 8.1, 8.0 and lots of 7lb. on down. Mostly on the Sebile Splasher 72 and 90 in amber fashion and hollow mullet. The 9.0 lb was hung in a tree on the bottom in 19 ft. of water. I emptied my pockets, dove in and swam down to get her. That was so cool to be that deep in the drink, come up and lift that hawg into the boat, what a battle. We have been catching most of our fish after the sun comes up on two different baits. First the Revenge jig with a Reaction Innovations beaver as a trailer. Secondly, the Big Unit by Reaction Innovations on a 5/0 hook and a 3/8-ounce weight. You will have to experiment with colors at different locations. I would also keep a Sebile flat shad and a Reaction Innovations belly weighted skinny dipper tied on and close by for the occasional schooling fish showing themselves. All year I have waited on the brush piles to turn on. For whatever reason they were not as productive throughout the summer this year. But, the last 10 days that has changed and this is where most of our 8lb. + fish are being caught. I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork on a professional guided fishing trip. With the trees turning fall colors and the weather right, there is not a better time to go fishing. I still have a few open dates in October for everyone; feel free to contact me anytime on what these dates are.

Tonight we have a stationary low with clear skies. There is an increasing chance of rain heading towards the weeks end. Since my last report at the end of June, we have had some tremendous rain. But, this has not dampened the amount of fish we have been catching. The SRA opened the gates to the dam and it took the fish two or three days to adjust. But, once adjusted they continued their regular July feeding habits. The daytime bite has been pretty good the few times I have been out, been spending lots of time out at night. The bite has seemed to change day to day depending on cloud cover, rain etc. The fish we have caught during the day have come on a Most of my trips have been at night this month. Clint Wright Well, here it is the end of June and boy have we had some rain. This is my favorite time of year to fish The night fishing trips I have had in the last two weeks have been good, but not as good as July and August is going to be. The cloud cover has made it extremely dark, which is why I feel the bite during the day is so great. July is going to be the month for some successful night trips. Especially, if these rain showers give us a break. The fish we have caught at night have come on Blk./Blue Revenge jigs with the Double Wide Sweet Beaver as a trailer. The bulkiness of the double wide is a must. (This set up has worked early and late during the day also.) Of course, the Big Unit (10 inch worm) is my favorite night time bait and has produced some nice fish as well. We are using these baits on the outside grass line on mainlake points. It is always a good idea to fish an area at night with two or three different baits before moving on. I have some available dates in July for you and they are: July 10, 13, 16, 17, 22, 25, 26, and the 31st. I finally get a moment to sit down and write this short report. Lake Fork is at full pool, give or take a few inches day to day. The water clarity is clear, especially the further south you are fishing. Milfoil and Hydrilla is just about in every area of the lake now that I have fished. I have been finding the outside grass line in 10-13 ft. in most areas. The bass fishing here on the lake has been great. 90% of my trips in the last 2 weeks have been at night. The bite was the greatest during the 10 days around the full moon earlier this month. As we loose moonlight the night bite has decreased. Many of my trips earlier this month would start out with topwater baits one hour before dark. We would often catch 20-30 fish during this time, mostly small fish. Then after dark we would head to main lake points, humps and flats with grasses, timber and an occasional man made brush pile to go hawg hunting. This is where the bigger fish were taking Reaction Innovations Big Unit in Black Emerald. I am using a 7/16 pegged bullet weight with a 5/0 long shank, offset Owner hook. I rig this on a 7ft. heavy action St. Croix or Falcon rod with 25-30 lb. test Sunline. Many hearts will be broken using any lighter line in the areas we are fishing! Most bites were coming on the outside grass line or in the brush piles. This night bite will pick back up during our next full moon period which is on 30JUN07. The bite during the day has improved since the nights are darker. If they are not feeding at night, they must feed during the day. A Revenge jig in Blk/Blue/Purlple with an assortment of Sweet Beaver colors as a trailer has produced the largest bite. Pitching and Flipping the timber around the grass is key. We have also caught some nice fish on 4-9 inch swim baits in 10-45 ft. A drop shot Reaction Innovations (Flirt) will catch numbers all over the lake from 5-45 ft. Give me a call for a trip here on Lake Fork . This makes a great gift for Fathers Day or any occasion. Let me be your Lake Fork Guide.

REPORT: What a week it has been here at Lake Fork. With the warmer days and the major bream spawn going on it has made the fishing a roller coaster ride. Our fishing during the day could not be better put as junk fishing. I have not been able to put together a pattern. In a few more days those bream will be back out into deeper water and the pattern fishing will begin once again. Our best baits for catching some fish during the day has been a topwater early, and then dead sticking soft plastics around the bream beds. Size and numbers during the day have been down. But, the night bite on the other hand has begun and is very strong. The black spinnerbait has been getting a work out here in my boat after dark. We have been fishing it above shallow grass beds very slowly. No need for a trailer hook, the fish are eating it just fine without it! This pattern will last until late Sept. The only changes I will be making will be adding some 10 inch worms into the mix in June. It is absolutely awesome when my clients hook up with a fish at night. They don’t know if it’s a 5lb fish or a 10 lb fish until she is in the net, unlike during the day when you see the fish jumping and waking. I have 3 or 4 nights left in June if you are interested let me know. If they fill up July is great too! Take a look at your calendars and try to pick a night as close to a full moon as you can.

Guide Clint Wright www.siteskins.com/lakeforkdayandnight Fishing Report 15May07 Our fish catching has been up and down. Fri. and Sat. we caught good numbers of small fish. Sunday we had a 10 lb fish with several fish from 6-9 lbs. all on a DD-22 and a few other deep water tactics. Seven days ago up until Friday my clients and I were fishing in 28-48 foot of water catching some huge post spawn fish that were gorging themselves with shad. This is one of my favorite times of the year to fish as fish over 6lbs are common. But, Sunday the water temp. took a spike and hit 85 degrees in the back of the coves and creeks. This caused a rush of Bream to come to the banks and start to spawn. The wave was so huge that it has caused the deep water bite to come to a halt. Those little fellows are just too easy of a meal for the bass not to come up and take advantage. We have been seeing a lot of bass, bream and shad in five foot or less, before the first break line. Some of the Bass have been well over 10lbs. The bass seem to be holding close to the bream beds all day. They are staging at the second break line and moving up shallow when ever they get hungry. The bass that are holding at the second break line are very difficult to catch, as there stomach is already full. We have had some great success zone fishing the bedding areas while dead sticking soft plastics. The morning and late afternoon is very exciting right now due to the topwater bite. I know of two fish over the slot this week caught on a pop r. It will only be a matter of a week or two before the deep water bite is off to the races. For those of you fishing the Legend tournament this weekend, I would start shallow and try to get some good under the slot fish. During the middle of the day use crankbaits in a bream pattern out in the tree tops off the bank. I had a small tournament Sat. and my clients and I won with five under slot fish at 15 ¾ inches using this pattern. That would be a lot of hourly money possibly and new boat in this weekends tourn.! I have started my night trips and have had some great success. If you have never been night fishing at Good luck this weekend at the Legend tournament and don’t forget to come see me for a test drive in one of these wonderful boats so your name can be put in for the raffle. This raffle is for a $40,000 Legend boat.
Lake Fork Day and Night Guide Service Hello everyone from Lake Fork, Texas. My night trips will begin in May this year due to a very warm spring. So take a look at the full moon periods and try to book a trip during this period. These wonderful trips have always been great, less traffic and big fish. Report: Here at Lake Fork we just had 3 inches of rain in a very short period of time. The Lake raised almost a foot over night making it close to full pool, just by eyeballing it today. Todays Tip: Start getting the DD-22's and drop shot ready. The deeper water tactics will start picking up in a week or so. We caught fish today in 35 foot of water schooling on shad around the mouth of Little Caney. Most were small, but I look for the size of these fish to improve shortly. Good Luck on the water and be safe. Give me a call if you get that Lake Fork itch, you will be glad you did. Check out www.siteskins.com/lakeforkdayandnight for more information.

REPORT: Today’s report is a little different than my usual. With all the cold air and lots of rain, any report I did have before would be no good to you now anyway. My family and I got back today after spending a week in Orlando, Fl. We went to Disney World with my 3y.o. daughter. This place is awesome; I think my wife and I enjoyed it just as much as she did. Of course I had to hit up the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes and a few private lakes around our time-share. We caught a lot of fish on all the lakes. Those pure Florida strain bass are long and skinny, not what I was expecting. Maybe it was just the time of year. I used artificial lures the whole time as many guides and locals were using shiners. We caught more on artificial than they did on live bait. That made me feel good about what we do here on Lake Fork! We are getting the rain we have needed all year. As I type I can hear it pouring down outside. This should get all of our local lakes at full pool. At www.weather.com they are calling for rain all week. This is going to cause the lakes to become very muddy. Nothing makes it harder for me to catch fish than cold muddy water. I have tried to reschedule all guide trips until it clears up. I am so excited about how good the bite is going to be very soon. Get those traps and spinnerbaits ready, it’s only a matter of time now!
Today’s Tip: When a lake is rising, move in. When a lake is dropping, move out. This is a general rule of thumb. Bass like to explore, when the lake is up into new areas this is usually where they can be found. Of course some new food is available for them there too. While fishing cold muddy water, I have had the best luck on black spinnerbaits matched with a Colorado blade painted in bright orange, big dark worms/jigs and lipless traps are a must have also. These fish could be holding tight to cover, so look for laydowns, stumps, fencerows etc. Hopefully this tip will help your success in the next few weeks. Lake Fork Day and Night Guide Service FISHING REPORT Guide Clint Wright
Hello to all my fellow fishermen and fisherwomen. This report is for Lake Fork, Texas 19DEC06. Lake Fork spring trips and Lake Monticello/Lake Welsh winter trips are available.
REPORT: Today’s Lake Monticello report is very exciting to write; yesterday was the first time this winter that we actually got tired of catching so many fish. The big females have now moved up into certain areas to spawn. We caught over 30 fish yesterday with only one fish less than 3 pounds and the largest being over 7 pounds. This was in only 5 hours of fishing! When you book a trip with me, be sure to bring polarized glasses, especially for the next 4 months. These fish fell to two different baits, the Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper in Houdini and the R.I. Trixie Shark in white. Fish these two baits on Owner 4/0 wide gap hooks with 20 pound Sunline FC Sniper line. Lake Fork has also been fishing very well. Many fish have started making their way up the lake to pre-spawn staging areas. I guess with this mild winter, they decided to skip the wintertime pattern. These fish will remain in these areas until the end of February. Lipless crank baits are going to be our mainstay until the spawn. Color choice is determined day to day, but the old reliable red is always good. The deep bite is off and on. Bar fish pattern spoons are still catching some fish but this tactic has slowed in the last few days. Lake Welsh is fishing great also. Many of the big fish are holding tight to wood in 4-6 foot of water. A Revenge Baits jig has produced several fish over 7 pounds in the last few days. Revenge is making a jig in black, brown and red that these fish cannot resist. Black Neon R.I. tubes have caught more quantity. I will be fishing Lake Fork, Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh from now until the end of February. Then it’s back to strictly Lake Fork for an awesome spring bite.
Today’s Tip: The reel drag is a very important tool that many people overlook. I am constantly changing my drag throughout the day to meet certain conditions. When fishing open water I like to use as light of a drag setting as possible, no need to rush a fish in. But, when fishing heavy cover I tightening the drag to take control of the situation at hand.
